yes, I’ve been using GitLab’s built-in message system for announcing short GitLab
downtimes recently. It puts a banner at the top of all GitLab pages (downtime
announcements are red banners, after a successful update I put up a green
banner for about a day). Moreover, the banner is also output to Git during all
Git operations (pushing, fetching).

As GitLab updates are rather frequent (about 2-3 per month, in addition to other
security issues like two kernel updates this month as well as the glib nastiness),
I didn’t want to clobber the list with all of those short-term outage messages.

Those outages are typically very short (< 5 min), for longer downtimes I will of
course write to the list.
