<p>I vote for a), for the following reasons:</p>
<ul>
<li>It is least invasive -- the actual local operators don't have to be extended / modified.</li>
<li>It allows for more than one implementation of a numerical Jacobian. This is useful because people may want to choose between different algorithmic-differentiation implementations, FD approximations, or may complex-step FD.</li>
