On my home machine with gcc-4.1 I could improve the compile time when
compiling with -O2 from
real    11m5.999s
user    10m23.199s
sys     0m4.796s

to
real    1m11.043s
user    0m55.447s
sys     0m1.992s

I had to move the switch statement into a seprate method. I don't
quite understand what is happenning here, but it seems to help.

We should test this on gcc-3.4!
