The problem might be the following:
ALUSimplexGrid<2,2> is a wrapper for ALU2dGrid<2,2>.
The type Grid returned by the default GridView is 
(probably) always ALU2dGrid<2,2>.
Could you test your example with the ALU2dGrid 
grid manager directly?
The only difference is that the constructor takes an 
additional int argument (1 for one level of non-conformity
as used in ALUSimplexGrid).
