[Dune] New numbering and the generic reference element

Dear Dune!
There has been much discussion about a new subentity numbering
recently.  Now that we are apparently in the middle of the transition
I'm starting to ponder the precise consequences of the transition
for my code.  Unfortunately, I am not able to find any documentation
on how the new numbering looks like, how it compares to the old
one, and how precisely the transition is to take place.  Could someone 
please
point out to me where the documents are, because certainly a
transition that has been described as so dangerous will be accompagnied
by thorough documentation?
