My problem with the Barton-Nackman trick is that it makes the code and the error messages more complicated without providing any advantages. As you say: the actual implementation does not make sure all methods are implemented.  Adding a third level in the hierarchy works, but makes the code even more complicated. 
I think just having each class unit tested is preferable.
