@christi: Mainly because the plain VTKWriter has that method and SubsamplingVTKWriter inherited it. But of course, if that method exists (and works) you can simply replace a VTKWriter by a SubsamplingVTKWriter if neccessary. If that method does not exist you first have to turn your vector of vertex data into a VTKFunction, which is a hassle if you just wanted to quickly debug something.
