OK, this was not the idea. As mentioned by Christian placement new could perhaps be a solution. If any(!) of reinterpret_casts to Reference* in grow() or free() is replaced by a placement new the assertion does not fail for the test case on andorra.

Please try e.g. (the still incomplete) attached patch.
