The above happens with CXXFLAGS='-O0 -g3' which I used for debugging.

With the default (-g -O2), I get

Performing 2147483648 iterations.
Time without SmallObject: 138.475
Time with SmallObject: 14.6578
Result: SmallObject is 9.4472 times faster.
Time with pool allocator: 17.3724
Result: pool allocator is 7.97099 times faster.
Result: pool allocator is 0.843741 times faster than SmallObject.

thereby passing the test.

It just makes you wonder if making such a test fatal is a good idea.
