Details - It seems like openmpi has problems receiving cascaded derived data types where the inner (custom datatype) has an entry that is not send at the beginning (i.e. a hole). At least on the receiving side the hole is ignored and the data is stored with offset 0.

It works as expected for lam and mpich.
