I'm unable to reproduce this error. It simply works with my gcc-4.3.2.
The really amazing thing about your code is that GenericReferenceElement has an automatic default contructor. No variables are initialized, here.
But I even tried to call initialize< GeometryType::cube > and it worked fine.
