Sorry, I wrote the last comment before seeing your answer. Replacing ENABLE_MPI and HAVE_MPI by including config.h doesn't change the error.

The options for dune are:

CONFIGURE_FLAGS="--prefix='/cluster/work/phys/cmay' --disable-mpiruntest --with-metis=/cluster/work/phys/cmay/ALUGrid/metis-4.0/ --with-parmetis=/cluster/work/phys/cmay/ALUGrid/ParMetis-3.1/ --with-alugrid=/cluster/work/phys/cmay/ALUGrid/ALUGrid-1.14 --disable-documentation --with-mpi=/cluster/apps/openmpi/1.2.5/x86_64/intel/ CPPFLAGS="-I/cluster/apps/openmpi/1.2.5/x86_64/intel/include -pthread"  LDFLAGS="-L/cluster/apps/openmpi/1.2.5/x86_64/intel/lib -lmpi -lopen-rte -lopen-pal -ldl -Wl,--export-dynamic -lnsl -lutil -lm -ldl " "
MAKE_FLAGS="install --keep-going"

The options for ALUGrid are: 

../configure --prefix=/cluster/work/phys/cmay/ALUGrid/ALUGrid-1.14 CXXFLAGS=-DNDEBUG CXX=mpiCC --with-metis=/cluster/work/phys/cmay/ALUGrid/metis-4.0/
