Well, it happened to me that configure considered my version of Alberta to be working while it was not.  I used a precompiled version of libalberta_2d.a (version 2.0.1) which was linked against libGL, but I did not have libGL installed.  configure did not complain, while it actually should have complained.  The reason might be that the linking test does not use libtool so far.
