There seems to be an agreement that += should be consistent with = and changing = is IMHO no opinion.

A further argument is that the proposed semantic is problematic if the matrix is not square or missing some diagonal entries. These problems also appear for the ID class approach. Thus I propose to reject this request and to use a free function as Markus suggested.
