Andreas:  I suggested to switch the interface check on if NDEBUG is not set.  You would usually not even notice this when debugging, because the interface check macro is expanded to a single line of code, so stepping and tracing will work as expected.  I would also be fine to have an additional flag "ENABLE_BARTON_NACKMAN_IF_CHECK" if desired, though a do not see any reason for this.  And I would not toggle this flag via configure.

My main concern is to get rid of the undocumented "DUNE developer mode" and replace it by something less obscure.
