You are right.  A method bool father() would be more consistent, and you know that I value consistency a lot. The idea behind proposing an exception was that it would be less invasive.  Non-existing father entities really do not appear to be a very frequent problem.  Maybe someone with more experience in parallel programming than me could comment on this?
