It is 2) but I actually use it to check to whether static_cast<To&>(from) works.

Most likely, the current behaviour if a copy constructor is missing is a bug. Maybe makeFrom returning a pointer and
test taking a pointer as an argument is a (better?) fix.

BTW if you use Dune you most likely use this construct as it is heavily used in the IteratorFacades. So please make sure you run the tests before commiting.
