[Dune] [#592] Abandon the Dune Grid Format

Dear Oliver, w.r.t DGF I se your point completely. However, we for example have used DGF quite intensively
during the last years. So, if the consensus is to abandon DGG then there should be an extended and
well defined grace period so that we can adapt our complete work flow. Also, the changes should be
more transparent to the wider user community (when compared to the change of the reference elements
to the generic one, of course no offence intended...).

Have a great day, Benedikt

THIS IS AN AUTOMATED MESSAGE, DO NOT REPLY.

A new Flyspray task has been opened. Details are below.

User who did this - Oliver Sander (sander)

Attached to Project - Dune
Summary - Abandon the Dune Grid Format
Task Type - Feature Request
Category - Grid
Status - New
Assigned To -
Operating System - Unspecified / All
Severity - Low
Priority - Normal
Reported Version - SVN
Due in Version - Undecided
Due Date - Undecided
Details - This is a point to discuss on the next meeting:

When DGF was first implemented the idea was to have a file format that could handle the most common cases, was simple, and could be edited by hand if necessary (at least that's how I understood it). DGF served this purpose well.

However, now we have a reader for the gmsh format, which also fulfills all of the requirements above. In addition, in can handle many more grids, is well documented (http://www.geuz.org/gmsh/doc/texinfo/gmsh.html#MSH-ASCII-file-format), and exists in binary, too. Also very important (too me, at least): gmsh is a well-established format, used by various other programs.

I see no more reason why we should spend our scarce resources on maintaining DGF, which we only use ourselves, where we can now get the same functionality through the gmsh reader. I therefore propose to eventually stop supporting DGF.
