I'm not sure if I understand the problem correctly: Are you saying that perhaps there are two different MPI implementations installed, and while mpiname announces
MVAPICH2, the mpicxx that gets called belongs to a different implementation (e.g. OpenMPI)?

In that case, my only idea would be to check whether mpiname and mpicxx are located in the same directory...
