Leonard, while working on mpi-config.m4 regarding the mvapich2 problem, I realized a small "ugliness" in your patch.
You do not distinguish between LDFLAGS and CFLAGS. From your extraction code I assume the intel is using a modified MPICH version.
Could you please try the attached patch?
