Unfortunately I can't convince gcc-4.4 to compile the 'deleter placement new on stack buffer' approach without a strict aliasing warning if there is no stored additional pointer to the static buffer with the 'correct' type.

In view of this (and the scary results of strict-aliasing violation) I'd prefer the 'pointer to static template method' approach in r5958.
