While Oliver's suggestion doubtlessly makes sense, I would like to point three things about it:

(a) It does not allow creating predistributed grids by the grid factory. This means that the grid has to be able to load balance itself to be useful in parallel.

(b) It is still unspecified whether the grid should be loadbalanced on creation of whether it should be built on rank 0.

(c) If a grid requires information on all processes, the grid factory can always communicate that information.
