I object. We have a feature freeze since 2 weeks and we should start to honour it.

Anyway, I am sure that this is not the only place where there is no thread safety guaranteed. While I am admitting that threadsafty would be very good, I doubt that anyone is willing to  make a thread safety guarantee for dune-grid in short time.
