two things you could please try:
1) cd to your alugrid directory
   export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=`pwd`
   /usr/bin/pkg-config --modversion alugrid
   and tell us what the result is.
2) remove the backquotes around the pkg-config command 
   in dune-grid/m4/alugrid.m4 line 72

Which linux distro are you using and which pkg-config version?
