For completeness we should also try the arbitrary order approach replacing collect2 by your linker e.g. ld.

However if the symbol is there but linking fails this seems to be a linker problem. Especially if the object file in the archive links separately.

Perhaps you should file this as bug in your distributions binutils with libgrid.a and linktest.o attached.

Btw: Do you use standard binutils or gold? The later is known to fail linking sometimes.
