For 2.x we should definitely find a solution to remove the violation. Thus I'd also not suggest to enforce this in the trunk.

But since removing the cast breaks compatibility we should neither deprecate or remove it in a bugfix release 2.0.x. Hence the problem persists in these bugfix releases.

IMHO we must enforce the flag anyways. Currently we do this by saying 'You have to compile DUNE with...' in the release notes. Enforcing it by the buildsystem just avoids problems if users do not follow our advise.
