This is probably because debian uses -O2 per default and because of "FS#805 -
test failure: test-oned" (i.e. the whole -fstrict-aliasing mess).  You can
probably force -fno-strict-aliasing with something like

override_dh_auto_configure:
	./configure CXXFLAGS="`dpkg-buildflags --get CXXFLAGS` -fno-strict-aliasing"
======================================================================
See "man dh" for some examples of how to override debhelpers automatic
commands.
