I'm just wondering if it would be more convenient to use the alugrid.pc information by calling 

pkg-config  --variable=libdir  alugrid or in the m4 script 

$PKG_CONFIG -variable=libdir  alugrid 

to obtain the libdir information. 

@Bård: Could you please check whether this works. I would prefer this solution.
