Thanks a lot for taking the time to discuss this issue.

@Robert: Yes, pkg-config is definitely the more general solution but, as
Jö said, alugrid.pc (apparently) isn't installed during "make install".
At least on my system "locate alugrid.pc" returns only the file in the
build directory:

    $ locate alugrid.pc
    /work/src/ALUGrid-1.22/alugrid.pc
    /work/src/ALUGrid-1.22/alugrid.pc.in

Oh, and yes, the "locate" data base is up to date.  Using find(1)
returns only the same files.
