@Robert: The status is that the problem is still there, because a) it is difficult and b) yes, I personally don't care much about it.

@Ole: Thanks for the patch. It looks like a definite improvement, and I will apply it. However I am not sure whether the problem is really completely solved with it.  An element may vanish if any of its neighbors is marked for coarsening, irrespectively of whether they have the same father or not.  Can you ask Stefan if there is a smart way to find out which elements are going to disappear?

Also, what do the colors in your vtu-files mean precisely?
