I support the requested introduction of the subIndex/subId methods for arbitrary subEntities. This will also help GeometryGrid when evaluating discrete coordinate functions on higher codimensions.
The implementation should be easy for all grids shipped with dune-grid (especially for OneDGrid, UGGrid, and YaspGrid, which don't support intermediate codimensions).

As for the topological embedding: This will need some discussion on the next meeting. If I remember correctly, there was already some premature discussion on the last dune-localfunctions meeting in Heidelberg...
