Well, as you stated, the problem doesn't warning doesn't occur for the average user.

The problem isn't that easy. There are other am-snippets adding dependencies to doc-local as well (e.g. doxygen). Sadly the basic "make" doesn't support the 'var := $(var) otherstuff' syntax which would be my usual way to solve this problem.
