argh!  I started looking into mopping this up, but it all leads the slippery slope into the autohell, especially because lapack depends on blas, which in turn may (or may not) depend on fortran, all in a happy mish-mash of not really adhering to any convention that allows to handle interdependencies cleanly.  Since I'm not paid to clean up properly (at least if that turns out to be another 2-week-long-nobody-cares-and-in-the-end-you-discover-you've-overlooked-some-corner-case headache), I'm going to leave it as it is and we'll just have to mop up when someone discovers a non-working case.
