Currently, both readMatrixMarket and writeMatrixMarket (in header dune/istl/matrixmarket.hh) assume a parallel ISTL appliction which uses and provides OwnerOverlapCopyCommunication.
The latter could then easily be used to read matlab sparse matrix files. We just need to assume reasonable defaults if the matrixMarket header information is missing.
