Sorry, I didn't mean to offend you. First, I'm not as familiar with the dune build system as you; second, I wrote my comment while you wrote yours (there's only 5 minutes of in between these two).

Anyway, our point is that from a casual user's point of view it is simply much easier to grab a tarball from a website, then extractinf and modifing it than it is to create a new dune module.  I thought that one of the purposes of dunecontrol is to take care about setting up the build system after such changes. But maybe I'm just wrong in this regard.

On a different aspect, it would also be quite a hassle to develop a dune module with a version control system which is not known by dunecontrol (mercurial, bzr, monotone and perforce come to my mind). a clueless user like me would expect that it is possible to use dunecontrol even in this case, but again maybe I just didn't get it right...
