I also agree that this is a good idea. However, in the first place I would like a clear decision on how it should be. The example given by Andreas (IdSet::IdType, IndexSet::IndexType) show that this change will have an impact on the interface. Hence, I think a clear decision is required before this change. This decision should also be noted in the coding style page (if not already present).
Personally, I think there are rather few XyzType's in the core modules and they should be dropped in factor of Xyz (the other way round, the change would simply be too big). While this should be done in the interface class rather soon, we should leave private types of the implementations as they are (reduces work).
Just a related question: Does type deprecation work properly?
