There are a lot of programs that even write temporary data to ~:

- Firefox stores the history and the cached data in the directlry ~/.mozilla/

- Thunderbird stores the mails in ~/.thunderbird

- kde stores the all kind of data, also resume data in ~/.kde

I could name a lot more.
