So what is this bug all about? As far as I can see, running

  make check

inside the $(top_srcdir) *does* build and run the tests from dune/grid/test. Unless make fails (e.g. because of test failures) before reaching that subdirectory.

But that's not a bug, that's just how make works by default -- `make -k` (or `make -i` as suggested earlier) can be used to change that behaviour, does that not work?
