@Oli: I'm on your side. Changing this before the release has its dangers. If we only do bug fixes until the release, this patch should definitely not go into the release. But maybe we can branch today? Backporting a few bug fixes will not cause any harm and I'm willing to backport my bugfixes personally (given the necessary permissions).
@Christian: You hit the nail on the head. The extensive use of TMP should be replaced by run-time computations. Unfortunately, this does not hold for the mappings. For me this is the main point of my patch, because GenericReferenceElement< void, dim > could actually do all its computations at runtime (to TMP required). However, this change will be slightly dangerous and I'm considering a branch to do it after branching off the release and committing the above patch (in case the developers approve of the corresponding interface change).
@Christoph: Thanks for the numbers. But as I'm actually interested in dimension 6-8, they are still far too large. Did you test with an unpatched dune-grid or did you one of the patches?
