Ugh, I thought the earliest supported g++ was 4.1...  And even that is on the verge of being dropped.  As to icc, claiming that icc >= 8 is officially supported is also going out on a limb, I don't think any of us is using one of those.

I suppose the installation notes need an overhaul.
