regarding putting -fno-strict-aliasiong into PYTHON_CFLAGS: I think that would be error-prone. At least you have to tell the user he cannot use "make CXXFLAGS=-O3" but must use "make CXXFLAGS='-O3 -fno-strict-aliasing'", iff he is compiling with python support. Just another argument in favour of the 'seperate library idea' -- then at least you have the problem localised and bugs are more likely to show up near the actual culprit.
