Excluding the complete test program "finitelemenets.cc" completely when dune-istl is not present is considered to be not the right solution. I'll exclude only the solving and vtk output depending on the macro HAVE_DUNE_ISTL. The didactic goal of showing a finite element method with dune-grid can be achieved in either way. The nice colorful picture only with dune-istl. I prefer this solution over a solver written only for this example.
I won't be able to do it in the next couple of day but I won't forget about it.
