While your doubts are understandable (though I personally agree with Markus), I think that the patch is useful anyway.

In some cases I needed access to the subEntity numbering and did not have the Grid's ctype available. The solution: simply use GenericReferenceElement<double, dim>. To my feelings, this is not very DUNE-style and violates the slim interface principle.

Moreover I do not consider the patch a solution to the problem, because reference coordinates are used in many places of the code. It just allows access to topological information without need for the geometrical one.

In my opinion, part of the true solution was suggested by Christian (this still does not fix the compilation time of the mappings) and I will start implementing this as soon as possible. To do that, however, I need to know on what implementation I shall base it (patched or not).

A final note: I was not just toying around, I will need to compile high-dimensional code. If this means branching a core module, I will heavy-heartedly have to do that. Therefore, I request not to unnecessarily delay this issue. In my experience such branches have a tendency to diverge quickly from their original. Of course, discussion is extremely important, but it can cause a big load of additional work (especially, if it is not lead with real interest).
