Unless I use an older git version (1.7.1) with the http URL:
git clone http://gitlab.dune-project.org/core/dune-common.git
Initialized empty Git repository in /home/mblatt/dune-common/.git/
error: RPC failed; result=22, HTTP code = 403

Maybe we should promote the https URL on the website.
