I vote for a), for the following reasons:
- It is least invasive -- the actual local operators don't have to be extended / modified.
- It allows for more than one implementation of a numerical Jacobian.  This is useful because people may want to choose between different algorithmic-differentiation implementations, FD approximations, or may complex-step FD.
