thanks for your answers.  Now everything works fine.

Both of the solutions work without reconfiguring, by the make command
lines

  make GRIDDIM=d

or

  make ALBERTA_DIM=d ALBERTA_WORLD_DIM=d

respectively.

May it be possible to check at compile time if the ALBERTA
configuration is correct?  Then the error message could be more
expressive.
