Come on! This just sounds far too superficial to me.

I totally agree with Oliver about the wrong semnatics.

Why not just use a free function that gets the matrix and a scalar and just does what you want. If it is given the right name everything should be clear and ok. No need to introduce additional classes that nobody will find anyway.
