OK, I have rewritten much of the documentation in gridtype.hh.  Especially the first part (which wasn't mentioned here yet) said something different than what the implementation actually did.  I'm not quiet sure about the MPIHelper stuff -- I think a better location would be with the MPIHelper itself, and gridtype.hh should only reference there.
