Well, I just stumbled over problems im AmiraMeshReader together with ALUGrid and went from there. There it is assumed, that a GridFactory has that constructor. I admit, that this doesn't necessarily mean one could not write generic code just having the default constructor. But at least one common constructor would be needed, no? As the one in question is in the (pure virtual) base class I simply assumed that to part of the Interface specification and that it is supposed to be there. If that is not the case, I would back your proposition, althouggh my vote doesn't formally count.
