The current implementation uses an L2-projection (and precomputes the inverse of the mass matrix in the constructor). Peter thinks the instability may be due to the used quadrature rules (though they should be exact, they may not be numerically).
Carsten, do you have an implementation ready using a Vandermonde matrix? I'd imagine the most interesting part is getting the interpolation points, they are needed for all kinds of geometry types.
